Living Inspiration

Congratulations to our friend Olga Koteklo for smashing another world record! MastersTrack.com is reporting that the Canadian superstar won the high jump at worlds in Budapest this week at 0.78 meters (2-6 3/4), giving THE 95-YEAR-OLD KOTELKO (!) the age-group world record and making her the oldest female high leaper in history. (She’s also the record-holder in W85 and W90, MastersTrack.com reports)

Check out our conversation with Olga when she was "only" 91. She explained why she didn't even start competing until the age of 77 and she shared her advice for living a long, healthy life. Rock on, Olga!

There is an African proverb: "A bird does not fly with one wing." Men and women should work together for the good of all of our planet and us. Finally, my hope is strongly grounded in faith in God.  Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro

A movement begun in revolution continues the struggle

The women's 'revolution' continues
Women participated in virtually every aspect of the French Revolution, but their participation almost always proved controversial. Women's status in the family, society, and politics had long been a subject of polemics. In the eighteenth century, those who favored improving the status of women insisted primarily on women's right to an education (rather than on the right to vote, for instance, which few men enjoyed). The writers of the Enlightenment most often took a traditional stance on "the women question"; they viewed women as biologically and therefore socially different from men, destined to play domestic roles inside the family rather than public, political ones. Among the many writers of the Enlightenment, Jean-Jacques Rousseau published the most influential works on the subject of women's role in society. In his book Emile, he described his vision of an ideal education for women. Women should take an active role in the family, Rousseau insisted, by breast-feeding and educating their children, but they should not venture to take active positions outside the home. Rousseau's writings on education electrified his audience, both male and female. He advocated greater independence and autonomy for male children and emphasized the importance of mothers in bringing up children. But many women objected to his insistence that women did not need serious intellectual preparation for life. Some women took their pleas for education into the press.

The Conundrum | About gender roles OR About life

In countries with strict gender roles, women’s total work hours tend to increase as they perform more paid labor outside the home. In Spain, for example, women’s work at home (housework and child care) declined by only 6 hours per week as their workplace labor increased by 8 hours per week from 2002 through 2010, say Jose Ignacio Gimenez-Nadal of the University of Zaragoza in Spain and Almudena Sevilla of Queen Mary University of London in the UK. The result is that Spanish women lost 2 hours of weekly leisure time over that period. A decline in leisure hours suggests a declining quality of life.

The ONLY 'SENSIBLE/LOGICAL' response would be to THUMB HER NOSE!!!

Of course, an  alternative would be to write an AUTHENTIC book about how life is to be lived  with dignity, grace and respect for diversity.  Imagine that -- the alternatives appear infinite now don't they?  Deepest of sighs. . . . .

Move Women Forward ~~ Moving right along

Move Women Forward has been working in a number of cities with amazing women from a wide range of professions, age groups and backgrounds. So far nearly two thousand women from across the country have joined the Move Women Forward movement!

Our members have connected with female community leaders in Miami, held discussions and focus groups in Tampa Bay, worked with mentors in Washington D.C. ... and we're just getting warmed up.

"My Forest | Our Future"

Everyone seems to be aware that we need forests, but we insist on cutting them down or replacing them with rapid-growth non-native trees. The lessons of flooding and loss of biodiversity have not been learned. The loss of oxygen and gain in carbon dioxide are yet to be fully realised. This day is one of the most important of all the international days because of the reliance that humans and wildlife place on the natural forest community and today, the individual tree, too!

Some kind of scrub or forest still covers 30% of land with 60,000 different tree species. Up to 70% of plant and animal species live there, meaning we lose 100 every day, as they are destroyed at a daily rate of 10,000 square km per day. The figures can't describe the misery and the loss. When it comes down to people themselves, 1.6 billion rely on forests for their livelihood. Tribal people and others who live completely within forest environments comprise 300 million individuals, among the poorest people on earth.

Timber industries, agriculture and simple human settlement spread account for most losses, with mining and other industries also deeply concerned with the losses we suffer. To recover our carbon, the oxygen we breathe and those magic places we crave, plant something today. It's spring in the north, so many will find that activity relatively easy! The UN are doing their bit by arranging their Special Event on Celebrating Forests for Sustainable Development, even with, "Women as agents for change for forests and sustainable development." Let's hope they plant an oak sapling too.

"It was a riot of colours when some 1000 odd widows, shunning the shackles of social stigma, played Holi at the 200-year-old Meera Sahabhagini Ashram.

It was for the first time that the widows gathered in such a large number to play Holi with gulal and water colour. They poured colour on each other in the presence of a large number of tourists and followers of Lord Krishna in the pilgrim town of Vrindavan.

Countering the age old social evil of widowhood, several widows have taken shelter in this holy city. It was a remarkable sight when the widows, mostly in the 70s and 80s, stooping low with age, danced and splashed more than 500 kilograms of gulal and gallons of water colours on each other.
More than 900 widows who were thrown out of their home by their family members today took a pledge against widowhood prior to the Holi celebration."

India's Gulabi Gang

The Gulabi Gang.

The Gulabi gang was founded in 2006 by Sampat Pal Devi, a mother of five, as a response to widespread domestic abuse and other violence against women.

Gulabis visit abusive husbands and beat them up with laathis (bamboo sticks) unless they stop abusing their wives.

The Gulabi gang is a group of Indian women vigilantes and activists originally from Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, but reported to be active across North India as of 2010.

Nicholas Kristof reports on domestic violence

To end the abuse

Nicholas Kristof, writing in the New York Times Sunday Review |
ATLANTA — WHAT strikes one American woman in four and claims a life in the United States every six hours?
This scourge can be more unsettling to talk about than colonoscopies, and it is so stigmatizing that most victims never seek help.
Paula Denize Lewis, an executive assistant here in Atlanta, was among those who kept quiet about domestic violence, for that’s what I’m talking about. She tried to cover up the black eyes and bruises when she went to work, and when she showed up with her arm in a sling she claimed that she had fallen down the stairs.

“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Unconscionable Palestinian child abduction from school

The Mother of Trees
©2014 by Alice Walker

If I could be
the mother of Wind
I would blow all fear
away from you.

If I could be
the mother of Water
I would wash out the path
that frightens you.

If I were the mother
of Trees
I would plant
my tallest children
around your feet that you might
climb
beyond all danger.

But alas,
I am only
a mother of humans
whose magic powers
have vanished
since we allow
our littlest ones
to face injusticesuffering
& the unholiest
of terrors
alone.

La Madre de los Árboles
©2014 De Alice Walker
(Translated by Cuban poet Mañuel Verdecia)

Si yo fuera
la madre del Viento
soplaría todo el miedo
lejos de ti.

Si yo fuera
la madre del Agua
lavaría la senda
que te intimida.

Si yo fuera
la madre de
los Árboles
sembraría
mis hijos más altos
en torno a tus pies
de modo que
pudieras escalar
lejos de todo riesgo.

Pero ay,
solo soy
madre de humanos
cuyos poderes mágicos
se han esfumado
por haber dejado
que nuestros más pequeños
encaren la injusticia
el sufrimiento
y los más funestos
terrores
ellos sol
